Internet shopping security can be visualized as a chain made of 6 links. The first link is you and your card, the second one is your computer, the third is my service provider "The Net Idea" which hosts my site, the fourth link is the shopping cart on my site since it collects information during your purchase, the fifth link is my "merchant account provider", which takes your credit card information from the shopping cart on my site, verify its validity then pass it on to the 6th and final link, the payment gateway which does the actual transfer of credits from one card account to another. Once that is done, the information travels back the other way to authorise your downloads. The whole information exchange and authorisation or denial is concluded in a few seconds. Each one of these links then becomes a repository of your information.These 6 links are responsible for maintaining the security of their respective data and when proper practices are implemented and followed ecommerce provides absolutely secure transactions.

My responsability as a merchant is three fold:

1- provide state of the art encryption for your credit card data. That is done with an SSL security certificate from Geotrust.

2 - choose experienced, secure and reliable links for the 4 links that I can choose (shopping cart, internet service provider, merchant account provider, payment gateway).

3 - ensure the protection of the data collected by my shopping cart software. That is done by abiding with the security checklist of my shopping cart provider
